That time of year again is here where NFL players have expired contracts and are either on the prowl for a new team or hoping to stay with their current team for a bigger contract.  Free agency can be a stressful for the fans, owners, and the players.  In the 2014 draft there were some players that were signed quickly because the team recognizes the value in keeping them, but we have also seen some high value players hit the free agency market due to either off field issues or cant afford them anymore.  What has been interesting is seeing how some teams have dived right into this and signed a bunch of players, and to see some teams sit back and let all the players slip through their fingers.  Some teams have had salary cap issues so it makes sense why they have been sitting back not doing anything; and they have been focusing on keeping their current players or waiting for the draft.  Some times the free agent period can make or break a team and its shaping up to be an interesting 2014 season.  Below are some of the big named receivers that have signed to new teams.

Wide Receivers

1. Steve Smith – Went from the Panthers over to the Ravens.  The Ravens are giving him $11 million with a $3.5 million signing bonus for 3 years.  Even at the age of 35 Smith can still offer a lot to the struggling pass offense of the Ravens.  With Torrey Smith on the other side and Dennis Pitta across the middle it should be an open field for Steve Smith.  And we all know that Flacco could use another weapon in the offense.

2. Eric Decker – Went from the Broncos over to the Jets.  This was kind of surprising since he was in the best pass offense and he is now going to a team that had very serious pass issues.  Now Decker did hit pay dirt by signing a 5 year $36.25 million deal with $15 million being guaranteed money.  The Jets finally released Sanchez, but signed Michael Vick to replace him.  This is going to give Decker to shine now that he is out of the shadow of Thomas and Welker.

3. James Jones – Went from the Packers over to the Raiders.  I think this is a good move for Jones and his career.  The Raiders have added a lot of people to the roster already and with Jones being a deep threat it should add a lot of depth to the offense.  The Raiders added Matt Schaub and even though Schaub had a terrible 2013 campaign he should be able to connect with Jones.  We have to remember Schaub fed the ball to Andre Johnson for a lot of years so he should have no problem getting it to Jones.  Jones was bound to get picked up quick with how he has a knack for getting in the endzone.

4. Golden Tate – Went from the Seahawks to the Lions.  I can see this going very well, or very bad.  Tate just helped the Seahawks win their first Super Bowl and now he is going to a team that has never been to the big game.  The plus is that the Lions is a pass happy team who has the best WR in the game in Calvin Johnson.  Now Stafford may not be the most consistent QB in the game, but he will have no problem getting the ball to both Tate and Johnson.

5. Hakeem Nicks – Went from the Giants to the Colts.  This is a great pickup for the Colts and I really think that Nicks needed to get away from the Giants.  As long as Nicks can stay healthy he should be able to have a fresh start with the Colts.  Andrew Luck is just getting better and better and Nicks could be a useful tool to help the team get farther in the playoffs.  Nicks was a big part of the offense in New York and when he was healthy he was almost unstoppable.

Emmanuel Sanders – Went from Steelers to the Broncos
Andre Roberts – Went from Cardinals to the Redskins
Brandon LaFell – Went from Panthers to the Patriots
Devin Hester – Went from the Bears to the Falcons
Dexter McCluster – Went from Chiefs to Titans

There have been so many moves happening in the NFL this off season that it is hard to keep it straight.  There have been players traded to new teams, players picked up off waivers, players signing huge contracts, players complaining about contracts, and players in prison.  It’s almost like if you don’t check the news everyday than you will miss something huge.  I have been floored with all the players that have moved to different teams though; I normally do not see this many players going to new organizations.  Below are some of the big names that are on different teams and my opinion if it was a good idea or not.

Cliff Avril DE  – Went from the Detroit Lions over to the Seattle Seahawks.  I think this is a good move for Avril since he has been a dominating defensive player; he will be a great addition to an already powerful defense.

Michael Bennett DE – Went from Tampa Bay to Seattle.  Another great addition to the Seattle defense; and a great move for Bennett.

Paul Kruger LB – Went from the Ravens over to the Browns.  I am a Utah boy so I am happy to see Kruger do well; but I am not sold on the Browns being the best team for him.  The Browns are lucky to have him though since he is a beast.

Elvis Dumervill DE – Went from the Broncos to the Ravens.  Even with the fax machine issue I think Dumervill will still do well in Baltimore.  It will just take him longer to get a Super Bowl ring now.

Mike Wallace WR – Went from the Steelers to the Dolphins.  Honestly, the only difference is weather.  Nice pick up for the Dolphins, but I do not see Wallace doing any better on the Dolphins then he did with the Steelers

Greg Jennings WR – Went from the Packers to the Vikings.  Only time will tell how this will pan out.  Rodgers is a MUCH better QB than Ponder; but Jennings is now playing with a run first team.  I think it will end up being a good deal for both parties.  Jennings wont put up numbers like he used to but he will still be a Pro Bowler.

Wes Welker WR – Went from the Patriots to the Broncos.  The only difference here is Welker’s uniform.  High powered offense, Hall of Fame QB, surrounded by weapons.  His numbers will go down because of Demaryius Thomas and Decker, but this is a good move for Welker and the Broncos.

Danny Amendola WR – Went from the Rams to the Patriots.  Picking up where Welker left off.  Despite what the Patriots want to say; Amendola is basically Welker in the offense.  As long as Amendola can stay healthy this will be a good thing for both parties.

Dashon Goldson S – Went from the 49ers to the Bucs.  This was a huge pickup for the Bucs, and a bone head move on the 49ers.

Jake Long T – Went from the Dolphins to the Rams.  Now that Steven Jackson left the Rams who is Long blocking for?  I guess Bradford counts, but I think Long could have gone to a better team.

Ed Reed S – Ravens to the Texans.  This is a perfect fit and it is going to make the Texans defense even scarier.

Steven Jackson RB – Went from the Rams to the Falcons.  Perfect fit for Jackson and the Falcons.

Ahmad Bradshaw RB – Went from the Giants to the Colts.  Even with his injuries this will be a great addition to the Colts running game.

Reggie Bush RB – Went from the Dolphins to the Lions.  I think this is where Bush needs to be; he will be a beast this year in Detroit.

Rashard Mendenhall RB – Went from the Steelers to the Cardinals.  It does not really matter where Mendenhall goes; he just needs to stay healthy.  With Beanie Wells being out of Arizona it does create a big opportunity for Mendenhall though.

Adrian Wilson S – Went from the Cardinals to the Patriots.  Brilliant move for Wilson and for the Patriots.

James Harrison LB – Went from the Steelers to the Bengals.  Even with his age; Harrison will make a huge impact on an already stout defense.

Glenn Dorsey DT – Went from the Chiefs to the 49ers.  He has had injuries, but he is joining one of the best defenses in the NFL.  I think this will be a great move for Dorsey and the 49ers.

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie CB – Eagles to the Broncos.  another reason why the Broncos are going to be a hard team to beat.

Terrance Knighton DT – Jaguars to the Broncos.

Josh Cribbs WR – Browns to the Raiders

Tracy Porter CB – Broncos to the Raiders

Chris Canty DT – Giants to the Ravens

Dwight Freeney DE – Colts to the Chargers

Shaun Philips LB – Chargers to the Broncos

Dunta Robinson CB – Falcons to the Chiefs

Anthony Fasano TE – Dolphins to the Chiefs

Shonn Greene RB – Jets to the Titans

Matt Slauson G – Jets to the Bears

LaRon Landry S – Jets to the Colts

Charles Woodson CB – Packers to the Raiders

Israel Idonije DE – Bears to the Lions

Philip Wheeler LB – Raiders to the Dolphins

Dustin Keller TE – Jets to the Dolphins

Brandon Myers TE – Raiders to the Giants

Connor Barwin LB – Texans to the Eagles

Osi Umenyiora DE – Giants to the Falcons
